Hello and welcome to another episode of my Interrail trip 🙂
Four days in Vienna – a city buzzing of culture and music of all kinds. For me, doing a cultural enthusiast, it’s been one of the best places I visited during this interrail trip in March.
Since words can barely describe what you can actually experience in Vienna, I’ll make it short and simple, so you’ll have an idea what to do and you can visit the city yourself 😉
Starting from scratch, the city had a personal cultural addition to me because I met three friends from Maynooth, Ireland, who were studying there. Emma, Aoife and Darragh study German and Music and were kind enough to host me for a few days. We could even celebrate St Paddy’s together! 😀
Arriving by night train, we spent a lazy morning chatting and exchanging news at their home… while starting out in German, we moved to English pretty fast, and, well, I missed that Irish accent sooo much!!! It was a bit like coming home just sound-wise 😉
City Walk
Later I got a great city walking tour – we also did a nice guided one the next day, have a look for the walking tours! We covered most of the inner city, including the university, city hall, Hofburg Palace, St Stephens Cathedral, state opera house and many other magnificent buildings and gardens. If you like classical music and you’re lucky, you might sneak into some of the little churches and find a little concert going on – just try it!

Besides the city center, you can rent bikes from the local bike system to get around. Like in many other cities there are public rent stations where you can rent out a bike fro free for the first 30-60 minutes and drop the bike at the next station all over the city. After the first hour you pay a small fee. This is really easy and available in many bigger cities all around Europe.
In Vienna you can cycle along the Danube river, explore the outer districts and maybe even try to cover the distance to Schönbrunn Palace by bike.
Due to rain, I had to take the tram to the castle – however the park and the building are stunning! Inside you’ll also find a museum about the history of Sissi and the Austrian monarchy.
Another amazing experience in Vienna was the visit of the State Opera House. We got some tickets for the standing room to see Faust by Johann W. Goethe. It was a great night!
And with musical greetings and goodbyes from my Irish friends, I left Vienna after three amazing days to continue to Budapest…
